Threats to Marriage

The family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity.

The quote came from a declaration. A declaration that was made by the leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This precious principle comes from The Family: A Proclamation to the World which declares the importance of marriage in God’s plan. This document, which at the core of our religion, was well before it’s time. Written in 1995, it has not changed and will not change even when society does. Since the time it was published, people’s view of marriage have been altered to believe that marriage is not necessary or that it is just a casual agreement made between two indiviuals. The sacredness and meaning of marriage has since been depreciated. Besides the unifying of two people committed to love and serve one another, the purpose of marriage is to create a family.

Because of the legalization of same-sex marriage, indiviuals are not able to fulfill God’s plan of rearing children in a family with a mother and father, each with a divine purpose. We believe that marriage is between a man and a woman and is eternal. We also believe that God created us in the likeness of His image and that we are made with purpose. Gender is essential in knowing our divine purpose. To quote from the prophet, Russell M. Nelson, “God is the Father of all men and women. They are His children. It was He who ordained marriage as the union of a man and a woman. Marriage was not created by human judges or legislators. It was not created by think tanks or by popular vote or by oft-quoted bloggers or by pundits. It was not created by lobbyists. Marriage was created by God!”.

This goes to show that citizens are not responsible in defining marriage, God is. He created it so that we may feel true and never-ending happiness as we find our eternal companion and spend our earthly life with our spouse and family together.
